Gold risograph print of surf scene

South African Surf Scene

The experience of surfing is simply surreal and deserves to be celebrated. Spending time in salty natural spaces has impacted my life in the best way possible. It has taught me to move with the waves in life. A time of play that never fails to bring my mind and body into the present.

A memory of my first wave, riding on my father’s longboard, reminds me of the power of positive moment in one’s life. Living with two surfers in my family reinforced my participation in the ‘surf’ lifestyle. I fell in love with the ocean following each interaction. Highlights include warm water waves with more than 100 dolphins moving across the backline of Glen Gariff beach break. This feeling of gliding over the moving liquid beneath you is simply exhilarating.

Description of the work

The landscape scene depicts a longboard surfer riding a wave with a dolphin jumping out of the water ahead of a sunset. The surfer has a relaxed appearance, illustrated with simple linework while the wave feels energetic with busy contouring linework. An expanding sunset formed by concentric lines give the work a ‘trippy’ appearance in an ode to surfing culture’s obsession with psychedelics.

Printed by Dream Press SA as a single colour risograph. The gold colour is matt in appearance and compliments the tones created with the brush pen.
